Wow! Such a powerful--and painful--one-shot.
It's nearly impossible for me to rewatch that scene, although your story has me considering doing so. Brian's thoughts are plausible and fit with canon. You express those thoughts so perfectly; it's as though I hear Brian's voice.
It irritated me that the writers in season four and, especially in season five, regressed Justin behavior. I think he'd long since matured enough that he wouldn't have left Brian again; he could have grown into himself alongside, rather than separately from Brian.
I'm certain both men were still suffering from PTSD. The bashing did a lot of damage to their relationship and made it difficult for them to meet each other's needs.
This scene is, sadly, a precursor for the finale. Both scenes tear me apart.
I'm looking foward to more of your stories!

We all saw it in the series. How he really wanted to and just could not bring himself to do it. Writing this helped me to understand what was going through his head and why he didn't.
It makes watching that episode just a little bit easier for me.

We all know Brian loved Justin and didn't want him to go, but he was always willing to let Justin go when he thought it was the best thing for Justin... that's absolute love!
