Amazing chapter! What Justin is explaining is making so much sense and it's so obvious.

I'm glad that Brian is smoothly starting to see the light and opening up. Talking and sharing has always been painful to him. Justin is doing a great job with his counselling. Showing Brian how he reacts differently depending on people is very enlightening.

This story is really down to earth and so captivating.

The only thing that bothers me is the way they take a cup of bad coffee and throw it quite every time they attend a meeting.

Author's Response:

Justin is really interested in helping Brian and being a good sponsor.  I imagine his sponsor had similiar discussions with him.  The coffee is a great plot point for them to bond.  ( lol)

I really loved Emmett's response, and Justin's handling of Brian. He has true friends, if only he would let each of them reach and teach them. Maya Angelou said two things that ring true, especially within the context of this story: You teach people how to treat you, and when people show you who they are, believe them. I think it's time for Brian to start handing out lessons to Michael and Lindsay, and make a decision of what they add or subtract from his life. Lindsay, of course, uses Gus like an anvil to hang over Brian's head, whereas Michael does his best to whine Brian into submission. When that doesn't work, in stomps Terminator Deb to set him straight. Jeez Louise, these people need lives of their own! So Justin's idea of changing Brian's response to them is really the only way to go. It's going to throw them for a loop, but they will either get the message to stop the bullshit badgering, or realize that they really are expendable in the scope of Brian's new life. Personally, with these two friends, I'll always vote for the latter option.

I hate to say this, but I think Brian really needs Mel to be on his side. Pay her the dollar for confidentiality, and confide in her just this once. It may be the only way to control Lindsay. I don't know, but it's sure going to be interesting to see how Brian manages his whining 'best friend' and the ever- cooing 'mother of his son'.

Fabulous chapter as always, and looking forward to MORE!

Happy Writing and HUGS, Sandy!

~Nichelle

Thanks Nichelle.   Justin is hopefully going to keep pushing Brian until he is solidly comfortable with his new life.  Lots more to explore.

Author's Response:

Brian wants to be sober for Gus.  Having Gus in the loft at the time was a huge encouragement to not take the drink.  Now for him to do the same when Gus isn't around.

He's recognizing his triggers. That's good. Lindsay and Michael are big ones.

I think telling Em was the right thing to do. Brian needs as many friends on his side as he can get because I have a feeling things are about to get nasty concerning the girls, Gus and where all his money he pays for Gus goes.

A new jeep. Thought he would go for something classier. Or maybe even the four door.

Author's Response:

Brian is being helpd by Justin to start to examine his life and how he lives it.  Justin is a key figure in his journey.  Telling Emmett, he is starting to look at his life and do more than read and attend meetings.

I think Emmett is a perfect choice for telling about what is going on.  Between Ted and Emmett, Brian will get good advice and understanding.  Brian is going to have to deal with Lindsay and Michael eventually.  I think if he started with Melanie and Debbie, he'd probably have better luck.  Now Justin will have to become more entangled in Brian's life to help make it better.

Author's Response:

Lindsay wants to keep Brian in check, but I think his sobreity journey will help him start to love himself and change his lfe.

Emmett might be a good choice as he will keep Brian's news secret and maybe help by making diversion in case of heavy questioning from the gang.

Brian should demand the details on how his money is actually spent by the girls. They decided to have a kid so they must handle the costs.

Author's Response:

i want Brian to stand up to Lindsay. He shouldn't fear losing access to Gus on Lindsey's whim.

Great chapter! I like that Brian is really taking note of the things and people in his life, including his reactions to them. Lindsay seriously needs to get put in her place, in more ways than one. I'm also really curious just why it's always a problem when Gus needs something when Brian pays more than enough for Gus' upkeep. I wouldn't be surprised if she's telling Mel she's receiving a signicantly lesser amount from Brian than she really is, and then hiding the excess in an account with only her name attached to it. It sounds just like something she would do, especially with her controlling tendencies.

As for Brian's comparison between Emmett and Michael, I found his assessment of each one spot on. Michael is a blabbermouth (in my Ralph Kramden voice), always braying, badgering, and bitching. He reminds me of what would happen if a sheep and a jackass procreated! Hee-haw-Baaaaaaa, Hee-haw-Baaaaaaaa is all I ever hear when I'm reading or writing about him...SMH Emmett, on the other hand, always possessed some inner-strength and selective wisdom. I say selective only because he picked wisely and chose to use it when it would have the most impact (Vic's run-in with the law). He also possesses a clear and defined sense of right and wrong, much like Brian, which I've always admired and appreciated. As I've always said in reference to Brian, Ted and Emmett, theirs should have been the friendships that were played up in Brian's storyline, while Michael's eternally-inmature ass should have been left behind.

Once again, I want to tell you that you are doing an amazing job with this fic. All of the decisions and introspection Brian is doing is not only well-written, but also poignant and inspiring in its own way- not only because of the subject matter of sobriety, but also because he's redefining himself in such a way where he will have to let go of the dead weights of friendships that are long past their expiration dates, and activities which seek to keep him from growing as a person. You're doing an awesome job conveying that.

HAPPY WRITING and HUGS,

~Nichelle

Emmett really cares for Brian, he just has not been given an opportunity to be the good friend.  By telling Emmett, Brian has opened up the possibilty to forge new friendships.  I think it will be interesting to see how Brian's life changes as his sobreity continues.

Michael needs a keeper.  To think that Brian needs to drop whatever he's doing to go to Babylon or Woody's is so rude.

Mikey needs more than a keeper; he needs to realize that Brian has his own life and it doesn't always include him.

Brian would be surprised by the support he'd get from his friends and "family" if he'd just tell them what's going on. Well good old Mikey would tell he was crazy and hand him a drink but the others would be behind him.

Lindsay better get her shit together! Does she report her every move to Brian? I think not. Bravo to him for finally putting her in her place.

I'm wondering why Justin didn't suggest Brian to empty the bottles in the sink. It could lessen the risk to drink.

I think it's good for Brian to unload some of his past on Justin.

Justin encourages Brian to make good decisions.  It has to be Brian's choice to empty the bottles.

Hey Sandy! Another amazing chapter! With friends like Michael and Lindsay, who wouldn't want to drink away the memory that they exist? Michael is chronically a child when he doesn't get his way. I'm so glad that Brian was able to withstand the peer pressure and whine fest of the idiot. Michael really NEEDS to find a life, or better yet, to just get left behind immediately. He's never going to grow up nor accept 'New' Brian because he just doesn't have the capacity to do so. That alone is obvious by the way he continually barges into Brian's office instead of actually tending to his own business.

Lindsay just makes me want to deck her. She's always so contradictory in an effort to maintain some faux sense of control. Sadly, it's worked well for her all these years with the way she continually sinks her hooks into Brian's psyche. I'm glad that he's realizing that anger and fear are two of his triggers, and remains determined to stay on the wagon to sobriety.

Calling Justin was an amazing decision on his part. I'm so proud of him!

HAPPY WRITING and HUGS,

~Nichelle

P.S. I'm not sure you know but the chapter in its entirety is reading twice. Just wanted to call your attention to it.

Author's Response:

I'm not a big fan of Lindsay or Michael.  Michael is really a very childish self-centered individual and hopefully, Brian will be able to evaluate his friendship with him.   Justin wants to help him and will do his best to do so.

Sandy Darling, I LOVE THIS!! You are doing such an amazing job with the subject matter. My eldest sister and brother had addictions for many MANY years, and now well into their 50s they are finally both clean and sober. It is a constant journey, even for those of us who are supporting their efforts.

I really love Ted, who didn't hesitate to share his own struggles with Brian. He's certainly correct in Brian needing to find other ways to fill his time. It's not so much boredom, but that Brian has to give himself permission to reinvent himself. For so many years, he had cultivated an image which Michael and Lindsay- Hell, EVERYBODY- vicariously lived in. He's has to know that it's absolutely acceptable to want to be someone different; to have something else to look forward to rather than simply exists according to everyone else's expectations. That said, I think Brian's assessment of Michael's reaction to his decision is more than a little accurate. Michael would spend every waking moment whining about who Brian is, what he should be concentrating on, who he should be according to Michael's edicts. So I really hope he doesn't find out until Brian is on surefooting.

As for Lindsay: That sanctimonious harridan is such a damn hypocrite since I'm sure she and Melanie have at the very least, WINE with their dinner every night and Gus is present for that. I mean if you're going to tell Brian that it's irresponsible to drink when he has Gus, shouldn't it have been pointed out that she is certainly NOT having coffee, cola, or Kool-Aid all the time when Gus is with HER either? Just saying! Anyway, I'm glad that he told Justin about her, especially because if Brian falls of the wagon, his interactions with Lindsay (who is like a modern day Joan Kinney in my book) would likely be the culprit.

I'm looking forward to more of this amazing story, and the continual journey of Brian and Justin. Simply freaking marvelous, Darling!

HAPPY WRITING and HUGS,

~Nichelle

Thank you for such a long and lengthy comment.  I'm glad that I'm portraying Brian in a realistic manner; I had concerns about my accuracy and I'm glad that you think I am doing a good job.  I'm not a fan of either Michael or LIndsay as evidenced by most of my stories.  Justin and Brian are in an interesting place in this story and I don't know how it will pan out in the end.  I hope my readers continue to support this new endeavor.
